What German online shoppers buy

"More and more product categories are moving into the internet. Brick and mortar retailers need to adjust and find solutions to avoid losing out entirely on this turnover. Tools such as click & collect or presenting the range of products available in store on the internet can help."

Frank Lüttjohann, CSO Sales Trade

According to a study carried out by the Federal Statistical Office, 45 million Germans purchase goods and services online. The most popular categories are fashion and sport, with 66 percent of those asked ordering items from these categories online. This is followed by consumer goods such as toys and furniture, before books, newspapers and magazines. The survey shows that a large number of products are now being ordered online - missing out brick and mortar retailers.

Online trade is taking over one product category after another. There is virtually no product range which has not experienced a rapid growth in e-commerce over the last five years. In the long-term, a considerable share of the turnover for every product and every category will be generated online. This trend cannot be stopped, not even by brick and mortar retailers.

It is therefore important that the advantages offered by internet shopping are implemented in store as well. The product range available in store must also be visible online around the clock, customers should be offered the option of ordering goods for collection in store using click & collect and attractive prices which are not too far removed from those available on the internet should be offered. Thanks to our brodos.net B2BC platform, even retailers with a small business can take this step at no great financial or technical expense.
