Walmart vs. Amazon: The ecommerce race

"The biggest retailer in the world has developed the right Internet tools and is very successful. This shows that retail must not ignore e-commerce anymore, but should be integrating it actively."

Frank Lüttjohann, CSO Sales Trade

OVER-THE-COUNTER RETAIL CAN COMPETE WITH ONLINE – EVEN WITH A LOW INVESTMENT IN FINANCES AND HUMAN RESOURCES

The American business magazine Fortune shows in a report, how Walmart wants to win the arms race with Amazon with the right e-commerce tools. Among other things, the American retail giant is testing a free delivery service and pick-up stations for food. Currently Walmart is already the no. 2 in terms of e-commerce in the United States and has recently overtaken Apple.

Walmart provides a veritable e-commerce race with Amazon. Just in 2014 Walmart had an increase in e-commerce sales by 22%. The many measures to catch up with Amazon, include Click & Collect for nonfood items in all 4,500 US stores and the delivery service Shipping Pass modeled after Amazon Prime.

Recently Walmart is testing drive-through collection stations for food in some test markets. The aim of this strategy is to offer the same services as Amazon and at the same time to have the big advantage of a large branch network.

WHAT DOES THIS MEAN FOR THE SMALL RETAILERS?

Surely many retailers will raise the question: Walmart is a great role model, but how should we small shop owners manage all that? If the world’s largest company by revenue invests millions of euros and a lot of manpower?

I am convinced that our connected store is precisely the right help, without having to take a lot of money and time into your own hands. With the Kiosk, a touch termimal for use in the shop, a product catalog with currently over 150,000 products will be available in your store. All that only for an investment of only 600 euros. Therefore you'll never have to send away any customers again, because you do not have anything on the spot.

Our new online shop is also free, the Online Kiosk. It is easy to operate on all devices such as PC, tablet and smartphone. It displays the same range of products as in the stationary Kiosk. Customers can also shop there during the weekend and if your shop is closed. They can order products via Click & Collect directly for pickup from the retailer around the corner. The prices in the kiosk and Online Kiosk are because of the StoreShip price recommendation always competitive to the internet price and are updated on a daily basis. The inventory management and price updating is done centrally and automatically by Brodos. Therefore retailers can thus concentrate on selling!
